We’ll soon be returning to Westeros after a difficult few years since Daenerys Targaryen met her fate at the foot of the Iron Throne. House of the Dragon, the much-awaited prequel series to Game of Thrones, is almost here, and with it all the scheming, murder, and warfare we’ve come to expect from George R.R. Martin’s writing. Dragons, of course. There is a tonne of dragons.
Before the bells ring over King’s Landing and a new era in Westeros begins, let’s review what we know about House of the Dragon.
About House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon is based on the fictional historical novel Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, which describes the ascent of House Targaryen to become the ruling dynasty of Westeros. Specifically, House of the Dragon is based on the last third or so of the novel, which describes a terrible civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, in which Targaryen battled Targaryen and dragons fought in the sky.
In contrast to the very linear timeline of Game of Thrones, this new prequel series will contain time leaps. Before the dust settles, House of the Dragon will begin about 200 years before the original series and cover several decades.
The central theme of House of the Dragon is the decline of the Targaryen dynasty. At the beginning of the show, they will be at their strongest. However, as King Viserys I Targaryen announces his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir, numerous groups throughout the realm either move to support the young princess or formulate alternative arrangements for the transfer of power.
As Rhaenyra and her childhood friend Alicent Hightower find themselves on opposing sides of the Dance of the Dragons, the adage “men would rather destroy the land than watch a woman ascend the Iron Throne” will be on full display throughout this series.
House of the Dragon release date
House of the Dragon will launch on HBO and HBO Max on August 21. This is the finest news of all. We’re about to return to King’s Landing, Storm’s End, Dragonstone, and all the other classic Game of Thrones places, albeit many of them will have a changed appearance. House of the Dragon is set roughly two centuries before the original series, so this Westeros will be both familiar and utterly unique.
After the broadcast of the first episode on August 21, new episodes of House of the Dragon will air every Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. There are a total of 10 episodes in season 1. Thus, as of this writing, the season finale is scheduled to run on October 23.

HBO is keeping many elements of the future episodes under wraps, however we do know the following run times:
- Episode 1: one hour and six minutes
- Episode 2: 54 minutes
- Episode 3: 58 minutes
- Episode 4: one hour and three minutes
House of the Dragon trailer
Since House of the Dragon was first revealed in 2020, there have been a few trailers, but the most detailed by far was released at San Diego Comic-Con in late July 2022. You can watch the trailer above to see the sights and sounds of King’s Landing, dragons like Caraxes and Syrax, and glimpses of future conflicts.
Fortunately, we won’t have to dwell on those hints for a long. House of the Dragon comes on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.
House of the Dragon cast & Members
House of the Dragon, like Game of Thrones, will have a vast ensemble cast. In contrast to the previous series, nearly every character will be compromised; don’t expect any heroes like Arya or Jon Snow to emerge from this sophisticated political maze. True to its title, House of the Dragon will also feature a large number of Targaryens.

George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal co-created House of the Dragon. Condal is the series’ showrunner, with Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik serving as co-showrunner. The composer of Game of Thrones and Westworld, Ramin Djawadi, will return to music House of the Dragon.
