Who Created the Rings of Power?

Amazon’s largest bet on original programming to date is the highly anticipated fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Even if the studio has been successful with its adaptations of the Jack Ryan and Reacher brands, creating a new series set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth carries with it great expectations. Peter Jackson‘s film trilogy enticed a whole new generation to visit the world of Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Dragons, and Hobbits. Tolkien’s fans are renowned for their fervor.

The Rings of Power, on the other hand, tells a tale that Tolkien fans are already familiar with. Set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, the series examines the early ascent to power of the dark lord Sauron and the cooperation of various creatures that eventually brought him down.

Who Created the Rings of Power?

The “Lord of the Rings” himself strives to exert dominion over Middle-earth through the One Ring’s influence. The source of Sauron’s power grants him authority over the other rings that were distributed to the leaders of men, dwarves, and elves.

The Rings of Power addresses an issue that was not addressed in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy: how were the rings created? Although the crafting of the magical objects is briefly seen in the opening sequence of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Rings of Power will demonstrate how Sauron’s treachery corrupted the leaders of Middle-earth. Sauron was able to adopt a disguise and persuade Elven blacksmiths to make the rings.

Who Forged the Rings of Power? What Are the Power Rings?

Celebrimbor, the ring-maker who revealed Sauron’s plot, is portrayed by Charles Edwards in The Rings of Power. Although the genesis of the rings is only alluded to in Tolkien’s original trilogy, The Silmarillion explains their beginnings in detail.

The Silmarillion details the complete history of Arda, the fictitious world in which Middle-earth exists. The root of all evil in Arda, the dark lord Morgoth teaches Sauron the craft of deception.

Sauron is able to disguise himself as the mysterious benefactor Annatar when he travels to Eriador’s northwest area. Sauron, who claims to be a prophet of the immortal creatures known as the Valar, bestows guidance and knowledge onto the Elves.

Celebrimbor is originally commended for his generosity. Annatar assumes the appearance of an Elf-like being. Under Annatar’s direction, the smiths of Eregion create seven rings for the Dwarf-lords and nine for the kings of men. These magical artifacts are said to grant protection to those who wear them.

Celebrimbor eventually discovers Sauron’s malicious aim. He discovers that the new dark lord has surreptitiously constructed the One Ring, giving him the power of the other rings. Celebrimbor covertly forges three further rings to fool Sauron: Narya (“The Ring of Fire”), Nenya (“The Ring of Water”), and Vilya (“The Ring of Air”). These rings are not influenced by Sauron.

Celebrimbor distributes these rings to the commanders of the Elves so that they can wage war against Sauron’s soldiers. However, Sauron discovered Celebrimbor’s treachery when his army conquered Eregion. After relentlessly torturing Celebrimbor, Sauron determined the location of the remaining rings.

Celebrimbor is ultimately executed due to his humiliating failure. Tolkien’s short narrative from the collection Unfinished Tales explains how Sauron’s armies used Celebrimbor’s corpse as a flag to warn their adversaries of impending catastrophe.

Celebrimbor did not appear in any of Jackson’s films, although he did play a role in the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor video game released in 2014. Shadow of Mordor chronicles the adventures of Talion, the Gondorian Ranger, between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Talion encounters Celebrimbor, who is resurrected as a wraith. After sharing his memories with Talion, Legolas and Talion join forces to avenge the deaths of their companions at the hands of Sauron.

At the conclusion of the game, Celebrimbor hints that he wants to construct a new One Ring that will allow him to fight Sauron. Celebrimbor abandons Talion in the 2017 sequel Middle-earth: Shadow of War so that Talion can pursue his quest for revenge alone.

By possessing Elven’s assassin Eltariel, he is briefly able to hold his own against the Dark Lord. Sauron defeats Celebrimbor in the end by taking his spirit. In Return of the King, it is indicated that his soul is not released until Mount Doom is destroyed.

Although Tolkien’s cosmology is deep and can be intimidating for new viewers, Jackson’s trilogy was able to create fascinating, familiar personas for the various monsters.

It didn’t matter if you didn’t know the Baggins family’s history; Frodo was a compelling character in and of himself. Adding Celebrimbor to The Rings of Power provides the showrunners with the opportunity to adapt a fictional past into an emotive narrative.

The first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will launch exclusively on Prime Video on September 2.
