All Quiet on the Western Front, a classic war novel written in 1929 by Erich Maria Remarque, will soon have a new adaptation that can be viewed on Netflix. The now-famous book was actually serialized in a German newspaper back in 1928, and it wasn’t until January of the following year that it was finally published as a book.
Due to the anti-war sentiments that were prevalent throughout All Quiet on the Western Front at the time, it was written, the novel was extremely controversial. As a result, the book was eventually banned in Europe. Since its initial publication, the short tale by Remarque has been adapted on multiple occasions, most famously in 1930 by Lewis Milestone. The adaption that was done by Milestone ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Picture.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel that advocated for peace and became deeply ingrained in American society. The book’s ideas inspired many prominent anti-war figures, such as Bob Dylan.
The novel will be brought back to life for Netflix by German director Edward Berger, whose earlier works include Deutschland 83, Patrick Melrose, and Your Honor. Berger’s adaptation of the novel will be based on a script that he and Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell developed together.
Berger expressed his excitement to Netflix Queue about the prospect of interpreting this German story from the viewpoint of a German character. “What a difficult task, but what a wonderful chance!”
