The special will debut at 7:10 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2022. And will go until 8 p.m., making it a 50-minute programme. This will make the episode a pretty regular length for a Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall episode. It is which was raised from 45 to 50 minutes in 2018. (with some episodes including season premieres and finales clocking in at an hour or longer).
However, it is on the shorter side when compared to other specials, which are normally an hour long. As a guide, the January New Year’s special Eve of the Daleks was 58 minutes long, and the most recent Easter special (2009’s Planet of the Dead) was similarly roughly 60 minutes long. The Doctor will be joined by Mandip Gill Yaz and John Bishop’s Dan for an adventure in 19th century China, where they will face off against frightening pirate queen Madame Ching (Crystal Yu) and the Sea Devils.
The Sea Devils haven’t appeared on screen since 1984’s Warriors of the Deep, and this is only their third major appearance on the show since their debut in The Sea Devils in 1972. Gill recently talked exclusively to RadioTimes.com. And stated that Yaz’s love sentiments for the Doctor. It will be handled more, making up where the “heart” of the special resides.
Meanwhile, the episode’s director, Haolu Wang, described it as Whittaker’s “final chance to have a bit of fun with the gang” before her regeneration later this year, implying that while it would be “extremely poignant,” it will most likely be a lighter episode.
Legend of the Sea (Doctor Who) the Devils’ Release Date
It’s going to be a fantastic Easter weekend. It’s hardly unexpected that the British series is releasing a special at such a critical juncture. After all, we’re used to seeing Christmas and New Year’s specials before the full season begins. This is the time of year when many families will congregate around the television to watch popular shows. Of course, the BBC would capitalise on Easter.
Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils premieres on BBC on April 17th. On the same day, it will air on BBC America in the United States and CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly Space) in Canada.
The Doctor, Yaz, and Dan will face a swashbuckling monster, and yes, Dan will have to dress up like a pirate. The Sea Devils are among the Doctor’s oldest foes, and we’ll meet the renowned pirate queen, Madam Ching. She’s looking for hidden wealth, and something deadly lurks beneath the 19th-century waves. It’ll be a thrilling ride for the entire family.
What Happened in the Evening of the Daleks?
Following the events of the Doctor Who New Year’s Day special, The Eve of the Daleks, the current TARDIS crew has reunited and is off on new adventures. The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) did, however, tell Yaz (Mandip Gill) at one point in the time-loop episode that her “activities” were “coming up” with her. Yaz subsequently inquired as to what she meant, and the Doctor shrugged. But we all know what it means: the Thirteenth Doctor is about to regenerate. In the season finale of Flux, a figure entitled “Time” warned the Doctor, “Your time is coming to an end… nothing is eternal, no regeneration, no life.”
In actuality, the three 2022 Doctor Who specials have begun, with each new segment counting down to the conclusion of the Whittaker era. The first was Eve of the Daleks, therefore Legend of the Sea Devils will be the thirteenth Doctor’s final adventure.
Who Are the Sea Devils?
These underwater lifeforms, first seen in a Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) serial named “The Sea Devils” in 1972, are not space aliens, but rather an offshoot of an ancient intelligent reptile species known as the Silurians.
This species of upright reptiles dominated Earth for years and co-existed. Further with dinosaurs before the advent of humans. According to a 1970 Third Doctor series called “Doctor Who and the Silurians”. The reptile Silurians and their aquatic Sea Devil cousins were both featured in the 1984 film. “Warriors of the Deep”. The Silurians did not reappear until the Eleventh Doctor’s (Matt Smith) 2010 episodes “The Hungry Earth” and “Cold Blood”. The Silurians reappeared periodically throughout both the Smith and Capaldi eras after their reintroduction. But the Sea Devils went unnoticed.
That is, until today! The title Legend of the Sea Devils implies that Doctor Who is reconsidering the canonical status of the original Sea Devils and will seek to reconcile them with prior incarnations of the Doctor. The timeline has been changed and altered significantly since the Fifth Doctor’s era. It is which might hint that these Sea Devils have a different goal than previous ones. While prior Sea Devil encounters occurred in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this story took place in the nineteenth century. So, at least from the perspective of the Sea Devils, this may indicate that the Doctor and their species are going to meet for the first time.
