About the Program and the Future of Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2

Step aside, Sherlock Holmes! The first female detective in Victorian England is on the case. Kate Phillips plays the clever private investigator Eliza Scarlet, with Stuart Martin as her Scotland Yard partner, Detective Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington. The first season takes place in London during the beginning of the Sherlock Holmes era, about 1880.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2

Henry, the father of Eliza, is a widowed, retired police officer who is currently a private investigator with mounting debt and excessive alcohol consumption. He has trained his only daughter, Eliza, in the trade since she was a young kid. She is now motivated to enter this male-dominated field. Fortunately, Eliza’s childhood friend, William “The Duke” Wellington, is a Scotland Yard detective inspector.

The origin of his moniker is the most renowned Englishman of the 19th century: the Duke of Wellington, who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. Similar to that other Wellington, the Duke is calm and determined in perilous situations. In addition, he is a ladies’ man, which creates issues with Eliza. Eliza and the Duke handle a succession of intriguing situations, sometimes in tandem, but frequently at odds.

Eliza’s initial hurdle upon beginning her firm is not criminals or clients, but rather convincing society to take a female detective seriously, despite her mastery of wounds, poisons, reasons, and red herrings.

Season 2 premieres a few months after Season 1’s conclusion: Eliza’s relationship with William (“the Duke”) continues to simmer, and she continues to face the limitations of being a female private investigator in male-dominated Victorian London.

Casting and Characters of Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2

Just beginning your relationship with Miss Scarlet and the Duke? Here are some of the memorable characters you’ll see in the first season, along with brief biographies of the actors who portray them.

Kate Phillips, also known as Miss Scarlet: Miss Scarlet may appear to be a genteel Victorian lady, but she is also scrappy, tenacious, and courageous. Phillips earned her mark in shows such as Peaky Blinders (as Linda Shelby) and The Crown prior to her role as Eliza Scarlet (as Venetia Scott). Fans of MASTERPIECE may recall Phillips from her roles as Jane Seymour in Wolf Hall and Tillie Seigler in My Mother and Other Strangers.

The Duke of Stuart Martin William “The Duke” Wellington is a tough Scotland Yard inspector who lives and breathes his work and believes that only men are capable of performing the duties of a detective effectively.

Eliza Scarlet, however, is eager to prove him incorrect Martin is well-known for his work on television shows, such as his three-season role as Silas Sharrow on Jamestown, as Lorenzo on Medici, and in the limited series Babylon. Martin’s abilities extend beyond standard on-screen roles. The actor has provided voice work for a variety of popular video games, including Assassin’s Creed, Dreamfall Chapters, and Ryse: Son of Rome.

Cathy Belton (Ivy, the Scarlet family’s housekeeper): Ivy does her best to be the part housekeeper and part parent to Eliza following her father’s death, but Eliza’s impetuous nature makes it difficult for her to heed her counsel.

Prior to Miss Scarlet & The Duke, Belton was best known for her performance in the Oscar-winning film Philomena alongside Judi Dench, as well as for her major parts in the television shows Red Rock and The Woman in White.

Andrew Gower (Rupert Parker): Parker appears to be a wealthy weirdo with a pleasant disposition. Underneath it all, though, he is an independent thinker who forms an unusual bond with Miss Scarlet.

Gower appeared in the fifth and final season of Poldark as James Hadfield, whose attempt to assassinate King George III was halted by none other than Ross Poldark. Fans of MASTERPIECE may remember Gower from this role. In the second season of Outlander, Gower created a reputation for himself as the “Bonnie Prince” Charles Stuart.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 2

Fans may recognize Ansu Kabia (Moses) from his parts in films such as Murder on the Orient Express and Last Christmas, as well as roles in television series such as I May Destroy You and Casualty. Miss Scarlet and The Duke is not, however, Kabia’s first MASTERPIECE performance; he has also appeared in World on Fire and The Long Song.

Henry Scarlet, a retired police officer, is the original Scarlet family detective, according to Kevin Doyle (Henry Scarlet). Mr. Scarlet ran his firm into difficulties prior to his sudden demise, leaving Eliza to pick up the pieces.

In Season 1, Henry’s recollection guides Miss Scarlet through the murky London underworld, revealing that she may not be so alone after all. Doyle is well known for his six seasons as Mr. Molesley in the television series Downton Abbey and the related films. Doyle has also appeared in a number of other television programs, including Happy Valley, The Tudors, and Silent Witness.
