The finest show on Hulu in 2021 is neither a true-crime documentary nor a true-crime adaptation. In contrast, the most popular show on Hulu in 2021 was Only Murders in the Building, a comedy about three tenants of a fancy New York apartment building who attempt to solve a murder.
It is a program starring Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez that has the ideal blend of escape and intrigue, making for excellent comfort entertainment. According to Vulture, it was the most popular comedy ever on the streaming service.
Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short), and Mabel (Gomez) discovered the body of a neighbor at the conclusion of the first season of the show. As true crime enthusiasts, the trio banded together to solve the murder, despite Mabel’s knowledge of the victim, which she concealed from Charles and Oliver. Eventually, Mabel’s past was revealed, and the trio connected all the dots to determine that Charles’ new girlfriend was the murderer. (We also have an explanation of Season 1’s conclusion if you wish to recall the story beats in greater depth.)
Before they could all celebrate a job well done (and the triumphant finale of their popular true-crime podcast), Mabel returned to her apartment and discovered another corpse: the grouchy president of their co-op building. In Season 2, the three must cleanse their names before it is too late. As of June 28, Only Murders has returned.
