Puss In Boots: Trailer, Release Date, and Everything We Know So Far

Jeremy Caroll

The sequel to ‘Puss in Boots‘ isn’t too far away. Puss in Boots returns in a new epic adventure filled with battles against his storybook villains. The sequel to the Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots, which was released in 2011 and starring Antonio Banderas as the voice of the crazily charming and fearsome furry robber, arrives eleven years after the original feline-fronted picture.

The sequel to Puss in Boots was announced in June 2014, however owing to DreamWorks reorganisation, the then-titled Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves was dropped off the schedule. The Guillermo del Toro-produced film, now called Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, is finally set for release.

Puss, with his skilled swordsmanship, smooth-talking charm, and incredibly funny timing, is returning to the franchise, and fans can’t wait to see him again. And if you’re one of those fans (like us), this guide will provide you with all of the details you want about this much anticipated film.

Further Information on the Series

Puss in Boots has reached the end of his ninth and last life. Everyone’s favourite swashbuckling feline is returning to the big screen after a lengthy absence. Puss in Boots’ first solo film, released in 2011, was a tremendous box office hit, grossing over $554 million worldwide.

Despite this, the sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish appeared to be mired in development hell, with a director change. Instead of Bob Persichetti (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Joel Crawford will direct the film, with Mark Swift producing.

However, the wait is almost over: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the first new Shrek adventure in more than a decade, has finally been given a release date and will hit theatres later this year. Puss’ epic quest to recover the mystical Wishing Star, the only object that may restore the eight lives he has lost, will be the focus of the film.

A teaser film has been released, along with a poster (below) showing Puss confronting a giant stone monster – and demonstrating that he hasn’t forgotten his need for public adoration. Puss’ appreciation, however, comes at a terrible price, as he realises he’s on his ninth and last life.

The teaser also shows the return of Kitty Softpaws, Puss’ romantic interest from the previous film, who will be voiced by Salma Hayek, a returning cast member. Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots in the sequel.

Is Puss in Boots: the Last Wish Getting a Trailer?

The trailer for the film, which was published on March 15, 2022, depicts the furry hero protecting his little city of San Ricardo from a huge adversary and describing the numerous courageous ways he has spent the past eight of his nine lives, was released by Universal Pictures. Puss’s death was brought on by a voracious desire for adventure and an unlucky shellfish allergy, rather than by curiosity. The teaser also reveals which characters will return in the sequel, as well as Puss’ new foes.

When Will Puss in Boots: the Last Wish Be Released?

The sequel to Puss in Boots, Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves, was confirmed for release in 2018. After four years, we now have a release date for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which is set for September 23, 2022. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, like many other films released in 2022, will be accessible only in cinemas. After years of numerous films being streamed directly, this is a welcome change.

Universal Pictures, the film’s distributor, has yet to announce if the picture will be released on DVD, BluRay, or Digital Download, or whether it will be streamed. If you’re expecting to see Puss in his second solo picture, make sure to get a seat at your local theatre when it opens. Meanwhile, if you have a Netflix account, you may see the 2011 feature Puss in Boots, as well as several of the Shrek flicks. The streaming service’s basic subscription starts at $9.99 per month.

Which Members of the Puss in Boots Cast Will Reprise Their Roles in Puss in Boots: the Last Wish?

In the next sequel, Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots, the gazpacho-loving gato. The Spanish actor has acted in a variety of films and television series since the previous Puss in Boots film, most recently as the merciless Santiago Moncada in the cinematic adaptation of the video game Uncharted. In addition to the original English cuts, the multilingual actor has also voiced Puss in the Spanish and Italian dubs of the films.

Kitty Softpaws, Puss’ love interest and doppelganger, will be played by Salma Hayek again. She is a streetwise female feline that is a superb manipulator with a sword and much more so with her words. Hayek is a talented actress best recognised for her role as Frida Kahlo in the 2002 film Frida. She most recently played Pina Auriemma, Patrizia Reggiani’s ex-best friend, in the 2021 film The House of Gucci.

Who Are the New Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Cast Members?

Goldilocks, Puss’ new foe, will be voiced by actress Florence Pugh, who is most known for her performance as Dani in the 2019 horror thriller Midsommar. Pugh’s first foray into voice acting will be this. In the sequel, Puss and Kitty Softpaws will be accompanied on their voyage by a new companion, a scruffy dog named Perro, who will be voiced by Harvey Guillén.

Guillén is best known for his role as Zach in the 2013 comedy film The Internship, in which he was hilariously awkward. Guillén has voiced characters on Mickey Mouse Funhouse, Human Resources, and Archer, among other adult animation series. Comedian John Mulaney, actress Olivia Colman, Samson Kayo, Ka’Vine Joy Randolph, Wagner Moura, Ray Winstone, Chris Miller, Anthony Mendez, Miguel Gabriel, and Kaley Alyssa Flanagan will all play unnamed roles.

What is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’s Plot?

The following is the official Universal Pictures description:

Puss in Boots is based on Gatto Con Gli Stivali, an Italian folklore figure from the 1500s who is shown as an anthropomorphic cat who uses his abilities of cunning and deception to assist his master in obtaining the hand of a princess in marriage, as well as money and power as a great lord. The DreamWorks rendition of this character’s origin is somewhat different, with inspiration drawn from cat videos on YouTube as well as some of cinema’s greatest explorers, such as Indiana Jones and Zorro, the latter of whom Banderas portrayed in the 1998 picture.

Puss’ designers intended him to have a colourful past in which he had gone everywhere and done everything when he was initially created for the Shrek franchise. After winning the show and fans’ hearts in Shrek 2, director Chris Miller wanted to explore Puss’ past before his time in Far Far Away. These offshoot flicks give fans a glimpse inside the charming and occasionally milk-drunk hero’s lengthy and illustrious background.

Puss has had a pretty rich existence since his debut solo picture, in which he faced off against his best frenemy Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) in a struggle over magic beans and a golden goose. In the sequel, he’ll have to contend with a new foe: his own mortality. Puss is in his final life after getting his bell run, both literally and symbolically, and Kitty Softpaws reminds him to make it special. Puss pulls himself up by his bootstraps and embarks on another journey after hearing the story of the Last Wish. Puss is living each day as if it were his last, fighting his way through folktale adversaries and looking for a second shot at life. Puss will meet another mythical antagonist, a criminal family lead by Goldilocks and her three bear pals, on his adventures. Audiences will have to wait and learn what tumultuous past has brought these two characters together.

Final Thoughts

If Puss is successful in locating the Last Wish and restoring his nine lives, the door to even more adventures for the macho gato in San Ricardo and beyond will be opened. This follows on the heels of DreamWorks’ announcement of a fifth Shrek film in 2016. The anticipated release date for this fifth picture has been moved back from 2018 to 2022, with no word from DreamWorks on whether or not it will ever happen. Cameron Diaz is said to be reprising her role as Princess Fiona in the fifth film, although the retired actress has yet to clarify.
