Sherlock Holmes 3 Potential Release Date, Will Robert Downey Jr. Appear in a Third Sherlock Holmes Season?

Jeremy Caroll

The game has begun, dear reader, and we must solve the most perplexing case of our lives: the mystery of the Sherlock Holmes 3 release date. We haven’t seen Holmes and Watson (Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law) in over a decade, and we’ve been waiting for their return with bated breath.

In the most recent thriller film, Holmes faced off against the Napoleon of Crime, Doctor James Moriarty, a cunning foe who was Sherlock’s intellectual equal. Moriarty, as sharp as he was, was no match for the combined efforts of Holmes and Watson, who outwitted the not-so-good doctor by throwing him off a waterfall.

Nonetheless, the film ended on a cliffhanger, and we’re curious about what happens next. There have been whispers, murmurs, and even an official announcement over the years, but we’re still waiting. So we decided to conduct our own investigation to find out when Sherlock Holmes 3 will be released.

Sherlock Holmes 3 Potential Release Date

As of June 2022, there is no confirmed release date for Sherlock Holmes 3, but we know that the film is in the works. The third Sherlock Holmes film was announced shortly after the release of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011, more than a decade ago.

We’ve heard bits and pieces about the film, but progress has been slow. According to what we’ve read online, the delay appears to be due to the script, which has been rewritten numerous times over the last decade. We also doubt that Downey Jr.’s central role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made things any easier.

The closest we’ve gotten to a release date was in 2018 when Warner Bros announced the film would be released on December 25, 2020. That obviously did not work out, and the film was postponed indefinitely until the Covid-19 pandemic was over in 2021.

Nonetheless, we know that Warner Bros. has big plans for the franchise, with Downey Jr. and his wife reportedly working on not only a sequel film but also a spin-off TV series for HBO Max. With that in mind, we’re confident we won’t have to wait long to learn more about the film.

According to One Take News, Sherlock Holmes 3 will begin filming in Atlanta, Georgia at the end of the year.

Sherlock Holmes 3 Plot

We can only assume that the third Sherlock Holmes film will pick up where the third left off, with Watson believing that the great detective has died. Watson, presumably, will then learn that the reports of Sherlock’s death were exaggerated, and the pair will return to fighting crime.

A Game of Shadows concluded with the titular Sherlock Holmes realizing he couldn’t beat his nemesis Moriarty (Jared Harris) and instead flipping the board, throwing both of them off Reichenback Falls. While the film ended with the predictable reveal that Holmes had survived, Watson was left in the dark.

It’s unclear what crime they’ll be investigating. So far, the Sherlock Holmes films have not been afraid to depart from the established canon in order to tell their own stories. If we had to guess, we’d say they’ll pick up on the running theme of the bad guys trying to start WWI, but that’s just a guess.

According to reports, Paul Anderson, who played Moriarty’s right-hand man Sebastian Moran, will return, so perhaps the “second most dangerous man in London” will return to menace the Baker Street boys.

Sherlock Holmes 3 Cast

It was previously announced that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law would reprise their respective roles as Sherlock and Watson. It was also reported that Paul Anderson would return as Sebastian Moran, though those reports are now a few years old.

There’s no word on whether Kelly Reilly, aka Mary Morstan, will return – and Watson’s wives do have a bad habit of dying in the books – so we’ll have to wait and see if John is a widower in the third film. We also don’t expect Noomi Rapace to reprise her role as Madame Simza Heron because Holmes isn’t the type to settle down.

While it hasn’t been confirmed, we’d like to see Stephen Fry reprise his role as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft. Why? Why? Because we adore Stephen Fry. Finally, we know who will be behind the camera. Guy Ritchie is currently working on Disney live-action films, so Dexter Fletcher has been tapped to direct.

Is There Any Sherlock Holmes 3 Trailer Available?

We won’t know when we can see new footage until the film is actually in production, but it’s probably safe to say it won’t be anytime soon.

For the time being, you’ll have to watch the previous two films again (or any of the plethora of Sherlock Holmes adaptations out there).
