You may recognize Skydance Productions for their epic action films, such as “The Old Guard” starring Charlize Theron, and “Annihilation” a sci-fi horror film.
Now, the studio is beginning to explore the world of animation. After completing the short film “Blush” in 2021, Skydance Animation will produce its first two animated features, “Luck” and “Bewitched.” The second film, scheduled for release in late 2022, “Spellbound,” is still a bit of a mystery, but here’s what we do know so far.

Release Date of Spellbound
The original release date for “Spellbound” was November 11, 2022, but that date has been moved. It will now premiere on August 5, 2022.
Alongside “Luck,” Skydance Animation’s first animated feature, Apple has acquired the film for release on Apple TV+. Unconfirmed is whether or not this also includes a theatrical release. This partnership will continue after the release of these films, as Skydance Animation and Apple recently announced a multi-year agreement to deliver family-oriented films and television series.

The animated musical film “Spellbound” is set in a magical world where a young girl must break the spell that has divided her kingdom in two.
Ellian, a young woman who comes of age while using her magical abilities to defend her family from the opposing forces of light and darkness that threaten to divide her kingdom, is the protagonist of the story.
The premise sounds somewhat familiar, but given the team behind “Spellbound,” you shouldn’t dismiss the film solely on that basis. From what I’ve heard, the film incorporates fantastical elements into its touching coming-of-age tale, and who can say no to another magical child attempting to save the world? The president of Skydance Animation, Holly Edwards, stated that the film creates a “compelling world” and “compelling characters.”
What is the Plot of Spellbound?
Split is the story of a teenager named Elian. When opposing forces of light and darkness threaten to divide her kingdom, he comes of age by defending her family with her magical abilities.
Cast, Director, and Additional Details of Spellbound
Rachel Zegler, best known for her role in “West Side Story,” leads the cast of “Spellbound” as Princess Ellian. Nicole Kidman will portray Ellsmere, the hyper-precise, compassionate, and righteous queen of Lumbria. Javier Bardem lends his voice to Solon, the vain and generous monarch.
John Lithgow portrays Minister Bolinar, and
Jenifer Lewis (“The Princess and the Frog”) portrays Minister Nazara Prone; both serve as the princess’ advisors.
The Oracles of the Sun and Moon are portrayed by Nathan Lane and André De Shields (“tick, tick…BOOM! “), and
Callan is played by Jordan Fisher (“To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You”), a young nomad who aids the princess in her quest.
We also know a great deal about the film’s creative team. The animated musical reunites director Vicky Jenson and producer David Lipman from “Shrek.” The script was written by “Mulan” authors Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, as well as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” author Linda Woolverton. Alan Menken, the Oscar-winning composer, is another name you will recognize from the Disney corner of the world.
Menken, the composer of such Disney classics as “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin,” will provide the score and original songs, while Glenn Slater will provide the lyrics (“Tangled”). As a producer, Chris Montan (“Frozen”) will serve.
John Lasseter, a former Pixar pioneer who co-runs Skydance Animations with Holly Edwards, has also had an impact on this film. Lasseter’s hiring was a controversial decision, given that he was fired from Disney shortly after sexual harassment allegations surfaced.
