Stephen King’s Children of the Corn Prequel Finally Gets Release Date After Two Years

Stephen King’s Children of the Corn Prequel Finally Gets Release Date After Two Years

Stephen King’s Children of the Corn remake has been in limbo for the past two years, but it now appears that it will be released very soon. The most recent King adaptation seeks to revive the series, which debuted in 1984 and has produced ten average sequels—a feat considering the first film was a commercial success but didn’t exactly receive rave reviews.

This time, the movie will approach the King short story from a fresh perspective, adapting it as a prequel as opposed to a direct adaptation. The movie will debut in theatres on March 3 and in digital format on March 21, according to Deadline.

The new version of the Children of the Corn tale shows how the titular children take over a small town and worship a being known as He Who Walks Behind The Rows by setting it before the events of the 1984 film and the short story.

The film was briefly shown in two theatres after being finished just before the full effects of the Covid pandemic became apparent, but further release plans were postponed and never realized.

It will now be one of the only Children of the Corn movies to actually make it to theatres thanks to RLJE Films and Shudder to purchase the rights to distribute the movie.

The movie’s synopsis is as follows:

“A psychopathic twelve-year-old girl in a small town in Nebraska recruits all the other children and goes on a bloody rampage, killing the corrupt adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.”

Why Has the Prequel to Children of the Corn Been Delayed?

The impact of COVID-19 on the industry initially delayed the prequel while Children of the Corn was still filming. Children of the Corn 2022, a loose adaptation that reportedly has little to do with the original King story, has been stuck in Development Hell for the past two years.

Children of the Corn could fill plot holes left by the 1984 original film’s story, but despite its appeal to audiences, it is understandable that a prequel to King’s famous story is having difficulty selling.

At the best of times, marketing a film about children killing their parents in a religious frenzy is difficult, which may explain Children of the Corn’s release date delays.

However, no official reason has been given for the Children of the Corn prequel’s late arrival, nor has a release date been set. As a result, while it makes sense for the prequel’s release to be delayed as the creators seek a way to sell a premise that could potentially alienate audiences, the release date of Children of the Corn remains unknown.

Hopefully, a Children of the Corn sequel, or at least a release date for the prequel, will be announced within the next three months.
