Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II during a key period in her reign in the 1990s in the upcoming season.

Season 5 of “The Crown” is only a few months away. It’s been over two years since the fourth season of the Netflix drama premiered, and fans have been eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the royal family’s lives on the small screen.

The anticipation for the return of the Emmy-winning program grew when Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8 at the age of 96.

The longest-reigning queen “died peacefully” accompanied by her family at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. “The Crown” continues to portray the story of her and her family’s heritage.

Season Four was set at the end of the 1970s and included Emmy Award winner Olivia Colman as Her Majesty. It also featured the queen’s oldest son, then Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), marrying a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin), and introducing Britain’s first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) as she led the country into the Falkland War.

With Season 5 just on the corner, here’s everything we know thus far.

About The Crown Season 5

Season Five will follow the royal family from the early to mid-1990s. The narrative will most likely center on Charles and Princess Diana’s marital problems: the pair split in 1992 and divorced in 1996, a year before Diana died in a car accident.

To bring the royals of that era to life, a whole new cast was assembled.

Cast for The Crown Season 5

For the fifth season, Imelda Staunton (“Harry Potter,” “Downton Abbey”) will play Queen Elizabeth, after Claire Floy and Olivia Colman, who played younger versions of the monarch.

In July 2021, the first photo of the British actor was released. “An early look at our next Queen Elizabeth II, Imelda Staunton,” the show’s Instagram caption said.

“I will do all in my power to uphold the very high standard that they have established.” I hope I appear cool, composed, and capable. In the meantime, my stomach is doing somersaults,” Staunton remarked of taking on the job in a Netflix film released last year.
