What Is the Story of the Woman King About?

The Woman King is based on real events that occurred in the old Kingdom of Dahomey, which is now located in modern-day Benin. The plot revolves around Nanisca, the Amazons’ commander, and her daughter, an ambitious recruit named Nawi, who “battled adversaries that violated their honour, oppressed their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for” (via Deadline). Nanisca and Nawi are most likely fictionalised representations of actual individuals. Nanisca was the name of an adolescent recruit who joined the Amazons in 1889, according to Smithsonian. Nawi was the name of a lady who was supposed to be the last remaining Amazon until she died in 1979. She had previously fought against the French in the Second Franco-Dahomey War in 1892. It remains to be seen whether the characters in The Woman King will draw directly from these ladies.
