Florence Pugh has been involved in numerous highly anticipated films over the past few years, accumulating credits one after the other. From Black Widow to Don’t Worry, Darling, the actress has demonstrated her adaptability when considering her next part and has retained her screen presence.
Following the premiere of the Olivia Wilde picture, Pugh’s depiction of Elizabeth (“Lib”) Wright in The Wonder will be released. This project is an adaptation for the big screen of Emma Donoghue’s 1850s-set novel, directed by Academy Award winner Sebastián Lelio.
Years after her debut performance in the historical drama Lady Macbeth, the lead actress returns to her roots by portraying a British nurse tasked with determining how an Irish girl survived months without sustenance. From the release date to the cast, here is a summary of everything we know about The Wonder thus far.
When And Where Will The Marvel Be Available?
The international premiere of the film took place on September 13 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The Wonder was then displayed to different festivalgoers over the subsequent two days.
However, you need not fret if you were not among the lucky few who saw the film during TIFF. According to a recent tweet from Netflix’s official page accompanied by the film’s poster, the historical thriller will debut in cinemas on November 2 and become available on the streaming service on November 16.

The film’s official trailer was released on October 4, and it already suggests that Anna’s (played by newbie Kika Lord Cassidy) fasting habit is more complex than the villagers realize.
Lib is committed to discovering the truth by studying her patient’s every action for two weeks. She must then report to the councilmen and provide proof to support her rationale regarding Anna’s remarkable survival without food. A few images from The Wonder were also published by Netflix, providing a sneak peek into the bond between the nurse and patient while the film is being shown.
Some images also depict other significant characters in the plot, such as Anna’s family, the councilmen, and the investigative journalist who is equally interested in the truth.
Who Is in The Wonder’s Cast?
As previously said, Florence Pugh leads the cast as the English nurse tasked with caring for a youngster who has survived months without sustenance.
Alongside the actress are other notable individuals. Anna is portrayed by rising young actress Kika Lord Cassidy, who has appeared in The Doorman and Viewpoint previously. The character is extremely weak because she refuses to eat and claims she can survive exclusively on manna from heaven.
William Byrne, the investigative journalist responsible for chronicling Anna’s incredible run without nourishment, is portrayed by Tom Burke. Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, and Dermot Crowley portray some of the council members who requested the nurse to examine the youngster. In The Wonder, Josie Walker of Belfast portrays Sister Michael, the religious figure entrusted with assisting Lib in monitoring Anna.
What Is Next For Florence Pugh and Sebastián Lelio?
The journey for both the actress and the Chilean director is far from over. Pugh will play Princess Irulan in the planned Dune sequel, for which she has already been confirmed. In addition to her important role, she will return to the MCU in 2024’s Thunderbolts as Yelena Belova.
Wait for a second, the actress still has more on her plate. After teaming with Netflix on The Wonder, Pugh will star in Netflix’s adaptation of the classic novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
Regarding Lelio, the filmmaker spent a limited stay at TIFF to promote this project before returning to his native country to concentrate on another film. Variety reported in 2021 that Lelio would produce the documentary El Porvenir de la Mirada.
According to the story, the documentary will focus on the victims who were shot in the eye by Chilean police during October 2019’s violent protests in Chile. This movie will be directed by filmmaker Cristián Leighton, while Storyboard Media’s Gabriela Sandoval and Carlos Nez will produce it alongside Lelio.
What Causes The Wonder?
This film’s plot is derived from Donaghue’s 2016 novel of the same name, which was inspired by the 19th-century phenomenon of “fasting girls.” In an effort to explore the truth from both the religious and scientific perspectives, the councilmen of an Irish village summon Lib to do a comprehensive examination of how Anna has lasted for months without food.
While Lib searches for a scientific explanation, Sister Michael studies the youngster in search of a religious explanation. The greater the nurse’s familiarity with Anna and her family’s customs, the greater her care for her. During this surveillance, William Burke begins his own research of the child for an article. As these three onlookers attempt to piece together the girl’s survival narrative, they come to recognize that there are numerous layers to decode.
This is Lelio’s first formal project since winning the 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In a statement, the director discussed his interpretation of Donaghue’s renowned novel.
