Netflix Has Cancelled ‘Warrior Nun’ After Two Seasons

After two seasons, Netflix has decided to cancel “Warrior Nun,” Variety has learned.

The choice was made just over a month after the fantasy action show’s second season debuted on Netflix in its entirety on November 10. The second season of the show was announced in August of the same year that the first one debuted on the streaming service.

“Warrior Nun” is based on Ben Dunn’s original comic book character Warrior Nun Areala. Ava Baptista’s character Ava Silva serves as the series’ focal point.

After an ancient artifact is inserted into Silva’s back, she is drawn into the world of the Order of the Cruciform Sword, a sect of nuns who fight demons and other strong forces on Earth. The television show also featured Toya Turner, Sylvia De Fanti, Lorena Andrea, Kristina Tonteri-Young, and Olivia Delcan in addition to Baptista.

The show’s second season spent three weeks among Netflix’s top 10 series, according to viewing statistics. It had a 26.22 million hour debut before reaching a peak of 27.74 million hours in week two. With 11.97 million hours of viewing in week three, it dropped to number nine before being removed from the list. Even though those numbers are not insignificant, they were not sufficient to renew the show for another season.

The cancellation was first reported by Deadline.

Warrior Nun Season 2 Review

Warrior Nun is too much fun. The idea sounds crazy and doomed. Netflix has a mixed bag of teen dramas. Luckily, Warrior Nun is good. After being reborn, 19-year-old Ava wakes up in the morgue. Her new life costs her. The legendary Warrior Nun battles Heaven and Hell. The main antagonist, Adriel, was freed last season.

Two months after the cliffhanger, the story resumes. Ava and Beatrice are hiding in Switzerland while the other sisters are across Europe. Superion and the other nuns must work together to stop Adriel before he takes over Arq-Tech and recruits Kristian and Vincent.

Could a legendary Crown of Thorns and a mysterious teen named Miguel stop this deadly foe? The story is fast-paced and full of action and drama. The movie is well-choreographed and surprisingly violent, with some nice twists. The midway fight, where the camera seamlessly weaves around three main characters as they trade hard punches and kicks, is a highlight. Episode 1 ends with a fast, bloody skirmish in slow-mo to show the nuns’ power.

Ava’s season is more compelling due to less whining and more urgency. Ava’s story is good, and you’ll want to know what happens next. Vincent’s faith is tested, and newcomer Miguel has a decent (if obvious) arc. The other characters are mostly plot devices, but they never slow down the production.

Religion and science aren’t new, but the mystery has a Da Vinci Code feel. Although the story suffers from the usual cliches, the Crown of Thorns and other religious artifacts work well. Expect apocalyptic scenarios, “chosen one” talk, and an unstoppable foe.

Warrior Nun is fun despite its predictable plot. This season builds on the first with style and panache. This teen drama isn’t to be missed—pray lets for season 3!
