Who is The Stranger in Rings of Power?

Warning: The following contains spoilers for episodes 1-8 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power! Return immediately if you are behind on Amazon Prime Video!

Who exactly is the Stranger in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Ring? Since the first episode, when the mysterious monster crash-landed in Middle-earth, we’ve been asking ourselves this question. Nori (Markella Kavenagh) has befriended the Stranger during the course of the season, and he has assisted the Harfoot family on multiple occasions.

Season 2 of Rings of Power: Potential Release Date, Cast, Plot, and Trailer!

The season finale of Rings of Power not only revealed the identity of Sauron but also hinted at the identity of the Stranger. Were you paying close attention? One critical statement and other fragments of dialogue reveal that The Stranger is certainly a very familiar face…

Daniel Weyman’s The Stranger is not Sauron, Saruman, or even Radagast the Brown. In the season finale, it is revealed that The Stranger is an Istar/Istari (otherwise known as a wizard in Middle-earth terminology), but one line reveals much more about his identity.

After regaining “fragments” of his memory at the end of the season (and the beginning of a new trip), The Stranger advises Nori, “When in doubt… always follow your nose.”

Does this sound familiar? This line is spoken by Gandalf to Merry in The Fellowship of the Ring. Now, the program hasn’t proven that The Stranger is Gandalf, but the Istar connection and Fellowship callback indicate that the fan idea is essentially genuine.
