Release Date for House of the Dragon Season 2: The second-to-last episode of House of the Dragon, when Rhaenys came out from under the flagstones on the back of her dragon, was hard to beat. Sensational. But who knew that the finale’s grand dragon moment would cut it down to size?
As is typical for the Game of Thrones universe, not everyone makes it out alive, and the consequences will be huge. We know you can’t wait for season two, so here’s everything we know about what’s going to happen in the second season of House of the Dragon.
What Can Be the Release Date for House of the Dragon Season 2?
We asked the old gods and the new gods for House of the Dragon to come back for a second season, and they did.
The answer came a long time ago. In fact, the news came out just five days after the premiere of the first episode. Given how much fans seemed to want the Game of Thrones spin-off, it’s no surprise that HBO was interested.
Between its Sunday premiere and the following Friday, 20 million people watched House of the Dragon. This was the most people to watch a new HBO original series ever. It was also on our list of the best TV shows of 2022, so that’s something else.
Francesca Orsi, the vice president of programming for HBO, said this about the show’s success: “We are so happy with what everyone on the House of the Dragon team has done so far.
“Our amazing cast and crew took on a huge challenge and blew away everyone’s expectations, making a show that has already become must-see TV. A huge thank you to co-creator and executive producer George RR Martin and co-creators and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik for taking us on this journey.
“We couldn’t be happier to keep bringing the epic story of House Targaryen to life with season two.”
So, let’s talk about when. When will the next trip for the dragons be? There isn’t a clear answer to that question yet, but we think it could be a while. The first season took more than a year to make because it was so big and detailed. Even without the civil war, it took 10 months just to make the movie.
In an interview with Vulture, HBO’s head Casey Bloys confirmed that it won’t come out in 2023.
“Don’t expect it in ’23, but I think it will happen sometime in ’24,” he said, but he wouldn’t say exactly when. “We just started making a plan, and just like last time, there are a lot of things we don’t know. You don’t want to say it will be ready on this date because you don’t want to be sneaky or secretive, but you also don’t want to have to change it.”
According to reports, filming will start in March, and production and post-production should take about as long as the first season. So a second season probably won’t come out until the spring or summer of 2024.
How Can I Watch House of the Dragon?
Stream all of the episodes of the first season of House of the Dragon right now on the HBO Max website or app. The cheapest plan costs $9.99 per month. If you have HBO as an add-on to your cable package, you can also stream episodes whenever you want.
Are There Any Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2?
Like most Game of Thrones episodes, the last one ended on a sad note, with Luke being killed by a dragon. Rhaenyra sends her oldest son Jacaerys to meet with Cregan Stark near the end of the last episode, so there is still hope.
Fans think that the next season will start with a trip to Winterfell, also known as the House of Stark and where Jon Snow will live in the end.
People who have read Martin’s book Fire & Blood know that Cregan will be very important in the future. When asked if we’d see him in the next season, the creators were pretty quiet. “I’m not sure. Will we? I can’t give you an answer, “Ryan told Variety a little bit. “Cregan Stark will be cast at some point, but I have nothing else to say.”
Another storyline floating around the writer’s room? There was blood and cheese. This phrase alone makes readers of Fire and Blood want to run away or fight. It refers to the nicknames of two characters who plot revenge against the Greens on behalf of the Blacks after Lucerys dies. “An eye for an eye, a son for a son,” which is the book Daemon’s philosophy, is the key to the story.
Who is in the Cast of House of the Dragon Season 2?
Even though Milly Alcock’s young Rhaneyra was a fan favorite, the first season had new actors play the characters as they aged up. Still, we can expect that the current cast will be around for a while.
Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen in real life, said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that after the time jump in episode 6, they’re in it for the long haul. “I’m pretty sure there won’t be any big time jumps after that, especially in the next season and the one after that,” he said on a podcast.
Even though this isn’t set in stone, these people could be in House of the Dragon season 2:
- Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen
- Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen
- Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower
- Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower
- Eve Best as Rhaenys Targaryen
- Steve Touissant as Corlys Velaryon
- Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole
- Matthew Needham as Larys Strong
As for surprise appearances, the showrunners told viewers that Daeron Targaryen, Alicent’s fourth and youngest child, does exist, if they were wondering where he was.
“He’s sent away from Oldtown to Hobert Hightower, and soon Hobert’s nephew, Ormond Hightower, who will be Lord of Oldtown,” Ryan told Variety. “There he is. That’s how it is. When it makes sense to talk about him, which it will, he will be.”

Who is Making House of the Dragon Season 2?
George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal made House of the Dragon for HBO. It is the second HBO show based on Martin’s works in the Song of Ice and Fire universe. It is a show that takes place before Game of Thrones, which ran from 2011 to 2019 on HBO and was a huge hit.
Ryan Condal is best known for making the dystopian TV show Colony, which ran for three seasons on USA, and for directing the 2014 movie Hercules, which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Condal and Miguel Sapochnick were also co-showrunners for the first season, but Sapochnick will not be back for the second season.
Sapochnick will continue to work on the second season as an executive producer, along with Condal, Martin, Ron Schmidt, Jocelyn Diaz, Sara Hess, and Vince Gerardis. The show is written by Condal, Sara Hess, Charmaine DeGraté, Gabe Fonseca, Ira Parker, Eileen Shim, and Kevin Lau, who is also an executive producer. The cinematographers are Fabian Wagner, Pepe Avila del Pino, Alejandro Martnez, and Catherine Goldschmidt. The music for Game of Thrones was written by Ramin Djawadi. He also wrote the music for House of the Dragon.
