The Primettes dazzled Motown’s executives, but the label rejected them because of their age. Berry Gordy, the creator of Motown, then asked them to return once they finished high school. Not deterred, the Primettes often turned up at Motown’s headquarters to provide a hand, from clapping to singing background vocals. Finally, Gordy joined the group in January 1961, but only after they agreed to rename themselves the Temptations. Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard were joined by Barbara Martin a year later when they renamed their group the Supremes.
