Born on December 24, 1961, former college basketball coach Jerold Taylor “Jay” Wright Jr. From 2001 until 2022, was the head coach at Villanova University. In his 21 years as head coach, Wright guided Villanova to six Big East Conference titles and 16 trips to the NCAA Tournament. A total of four Final Fours (in 2009, 2016, 2018, and 2022) were achieved by the Wildcats with Wright at the helm, including two national titles in 2016 and 2018.
Wright was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the class of 2021 and is largely considered one of the top coaches in NCAA history
For six seasons (1994–2001), he served as the head coach at Hofstra University, when his teams made NCAA Tournament berths in both 2000 and 2001.
Wright’s first coaching employment was as an assistant coach at Division III University of Rochester after he graduated from college. In 1986, he was hired as an assistant coach at Drexel University, his first job in Division I collegiate basketball. From 1987 through 1992, he worked as Rollie Massimino’s assistant at Villanova. He joined Massimino at UNLV in 1992 and remained there until 1994.
Villanova hired Wright as its seventh head coach in the program’s 81-year history on March 27, 2001. Despite inheriting a poor squad from Steve Lappas, Wright led the club to the NIT in his first season as head coach. Jason Fraser, a McDonald’s All-American center, was one of the best-rated recruiting classes in the country in 2002. A phone card misuse controversy tarnished the Wildcats’ 2002–03 season, leading to the suspension of more than half of its players.
The Catamounts were back in the NIT, but they didn’t go very far this time. It was a poor season and another NIT campaign that saw increased playing time for the talented young players from the previous recruiting class in the 2003–04 season. In 2002 and 2004, Villanova made it to the quarterfinals of the NIT.
Forward Curtis Sumpter and guards Allen Ray and Randy Foye helped Wright’s Wildcats have a breakthrough season in 2004–05. With victories against No. 2 Kansas and No. 3 Boston College, Villanova concluded the year with a record of 22–7. For their efforts, the Wildcats received the fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament, their first trip since 1999. In order to reach the Sweet 16, Villanova had to beat New Mexico and Florida. However, they were eliminated from the tournament in the following round after a close loss to top-seeded North Carolina (and eventual champion). The final Associated Press poll had Villanova at 19th place, their highest ranking in eight years.
Due to the return of the majority of its players from the previous season, the Wildcats were placed in the top four of both major preseason polls heading into the 2005–06 season. Wildcats seniors Allan Ray and Randy Foye led the team to a 25–4 regular-season record, which included a 14–2 Big East regular-season record, tying them with the University of Connecticut for first place in the league. Sophomore Kyle Lowry was also a standout performer.
