Jeremy Caroll

Metro Boomin, whose true name is Leland Tyler Wayne, was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 16, 1993. He is one of four siblings. Wayne began playing bass guitar in the school band when he was in middle school, and at the age of 13, he began composing beats. Wayne attended Parkway North High School as a teenager. Despite his original desire to pursue a rap career, he finally chose to pursue hip-hop production instead.

Career Beginnings

Early on, Wayne began using social media to connect with renowned hip-hop artists while still in high school. It was not uncommon for his mother to take him from St. Louis to Atlanta in order to meet up with musicians with whom he had been in contact via the internet. Tay Don was one of his first collaborators, and it led to work with musicians like Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman, and Future. Morehouse College’s business management program drew Wayne to Atlanta after high school, where he completed his degree. After only a semester, he decided to put school on hold in order to pursue music full-time. As Metro Boomin, he released his debut mixtape “19 & Boomin” in 2013.
