Early Life of ‘The Rock’
Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. His father and grandpa were also former professional wrestlers, therefore he was born into a wrestling family. His grandma was a female wrestler promoter as well.
Dwayne spent a short time as a child with his mother’s family in New Zealand. He attended Richmond Road Primary School in Auckland before returning to the United States and finishing 10th grade at a high school in Hawaii.
The following year, the family was forced to travel to Pennsylvania, and it was here that Johnson developed an interest in football. He accepted a football scholarship from the University of Miami. He was a member of Miami’s national championship team but was replaced due to an injury.
Dwayne met his future wife, Dany Garcia, at University. Dany Garcia is the founder of a financial management firm in Miami. Dwayne headed to Canada after graduation to play with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
Johnson later played in the Canadian Football League for the Calgary Stampeders but was released early in his rookie season. He then decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandpa, both of whom were professional wrestlers.
Johnson made his WWF debut as Rocky Maivia, a heroic character combining his father and grandfather’s ring names. Johnson took on the role of a villain in the ring in 1997, adopting the moniker The Rock, a captivating persona that crowds quickly warmed to. From 1996 to 2004, Johnson earned his mark as a wrestler in World Wrestling Entertainment. He was a WWE world heavyweight champion nine times. Johnson initially hosted Saturday Night Live in 2000, with appearances by fellow wrestlers The Big Show, Triple H, and Mick Foley.
The Rock began his acting career in 2001 and shifted to full-time acting in 2004. In 2000, Johnson published his autobiography, “The Rock Says.” The book launched at the top of The New York Times Best Seller list, where it remained for several weeks. Johnson’s first big part was in The Scorpion King in 2002, and he continued his acting career with roles in Walking Tall, Gridiron Gang, Get Smart, Race to Witch Mountain, Be Cool, The Game Plan, Planet 51, Why Did I Get Married Too?, Tooth Fairy, and The Other Guys.
