Athena on Netflix: Based on Real Event?

A recent conversation that Romain had with Hollywood Reporter included him making the following statement: “It’s not a real estate. We decided to give it the name Athena because we were going for a Greek tragedy vibe, and Athena is the Greek goddess of battle as well as knowledge. Therefore, it is not a genuine neighborhood, and the narrative that it is based on did not actually happen.

Gavras continued by saying, “It was based on a number of different stories. Although this riot has not taken place just yet, it has all the makings of the riot that might take place. We wanted to picture what could be the spark that could truly fire the entire country, and we wanted to be a part of it nearly in the same way that the first battle of the civil war would be. Because there is a lot of anxiety not only in other parts of the world, but also in Paris.”

The conversation proceeded with Gavras saying, “And we feel like everyone’s kind of pushing towards it.” And if we’ve learned anything from the past, it’s that civil wars are the worst thing that could ever happen to a society. When you look at the Greek civil war, it’s something that the men in my family have been familiar with — it’s like grandfather against grandfather; cousin against cousin. Because it occurred within the family, the situation is quite problematic. Because of this, we decided to focus on the more personal story of a family that is being torn apart, where their anguish spreads first throughout the neighborhood and then throughout the country.

Athena on Netflix Cast

Incredible performances come from the entire cast of the tragic movie Athena. In the film, Dali Benssalah plays the role of Abdel, Sami Slimane plays the role of Karim, Ouassini Embarek plays the role of Moktar, Anthony Bajon plays the role of Jérôme, and Alexis Manenti plays the role of Sébastien.

During an interaction with the media, Romain, the director of the movie Athena, explained that the cast and crew of the movie had rehearsed for almost eight weeks prior to filming for 52 days outside of the French capital and without the use of CGI. Romain also stated that the movie was filmed without the use of CGI.

Gavras was quoted as saying, “The battles are real, and so are the pyrotechnics.” It is usually difficult to give the appearance that there is chaos, frenzy, and violence; nonetheless, the procedure had an almost military-like organization.

The director continued, saying that they “thought of it and choreographed it almost like an opera,” but always in a very realistic way so that the choreography wouldn’t be sensed by the audience. There is a heightened realism with extremely strong symbolism — almost mythological shots — overlaid onto the present to create a kind of timeless struggle.”
