Who is Max Duggan and Why he needs a heart surgery?

Max Duggan Heart Surgery: Max Duggan’s route to New York City has been as turbulent as Sonny Dykes’ first season at TCU if one were to compare the two. It grossly understates the reality.

This season, Duggan did not even begin as the starter. When Dykes took over, he selected redshirt sophomore Morris Chandler as the starting quarterback, a designation that lasted only one game until Chandler suffered an injury and was replaced by Duggan.

Now, after 13 games, the Horned Frogs are 12-1 and headed to the playoffs, thanks primarily to the clutch play of Duggan and the TCU offense.

This season, Texas Christian has become synonymous with comeback triumphs, most recently forcing overtime against Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship Game with a spectacular last drive that left Duggan doubled over in pain.

Why did Max Duggan get heart surgery?

When Duggan was examined for COVID-19 in 2020, physicians discovered something altogether different: Duggan was born with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. An additional electrical route in the heart creates a fast pulse in this disease.

According to Duggan, the procedure to treat the condition was lengthy and fraught with problems.

“It inserted catheters into my neck and crotch,” he recalled, as reported by Texas Monthly. “I underwent a nine-hour operation. Two days later, I developed a blood clot as a result of the procedure, necessitating immediate emergency surgery. It essentially puts an end to your life.”

According to Duggan, he had to inform his parents of his situation, but he was optimistic about his ability to return to the field.

Despite not beginning TCU’s 2021 season opener against Iowa State, he joined the game and completed 16 of 19 passes for three touchdowns in a 34-31 loss.

The message, though, was very clear: nothing would keep Duggan off the field. He played most of the previous season with a fractured foot and a torn tendon, both of which required surgery after the season concluded.

In the final two games of his collegiate football career, he will have to lead TCU to the national title.
