Shane Black, the director of “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” and “Iron Man 3,” seemed poised to usher in a new era of spine-ripping, skull-collecting aliens after the release of “The Predator” in 2018. However, with the failure of that picture to connect with audiences and critics alike, it appeared that the ideas for the legendary cinematic monster were stalled.

Even so, filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg has stepped up with an entirely new take on the subject that precedes the events of the original 1987 action sci-fi classic, 10 Cloverfield Lane. The prequel, to be titled “Prey,” will premiere later this summer.

With the much-anticipated release of “Prey” just around the corner, we’re here to answer all of your questions.

Where Does It Fall Within the Canon of Predator Movies?

You may or may not remember the very first film in the Predator franchise, which was produced in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers. This is dependent on your age as well as your overall preference for the genre. In that movie, the protagonists were members of an elite paramilitary rescue team that had been deployed deep within the jungles of Central America. They soon found themselves in the line of fire of a lethal extraterrestrial warrior.

Predator 2 (1990), the sequel to the original film, is set in the not too distant future of 1997. This time around, the jungles of Central America have been swapped out for the “urban jungle” of Los Angeles, and Arnold Schwarzenegger has been replaced by Danny Glover, who is playing the role of a “beleagured investigator” at his most intense. Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, the character played by Glover, is working to prevent a turf war from breaking out between the drug gangs operating in Columbia and Jamaica.

Absolutely, it is as bit as offensive as you might think it would be. Instead, the Predator begins slaying the leaders of the cartels, and Harrigan finds himself in the thick of the conflict. Eventually, Harrigan kills the Predator on the Predator’s own ship, earning the approval of the Predator’s fellow crewmembers.

And then there was Predators (2010), an even worse sequel, in which, amongst other actors, Adrian Brody, Topher Grace, and Laurence Fishburne play mercenaries and killers who are kidnapped by the Predators and taken to a planet that serves as a game reserve for the alien predators.

The Alien vs. Predator crossover films, which were released in 2004 and 2007, are also a part of this mix. In these movies, groups of unwary humans become caught in the crossfire of a battle between Predators and Xenomorphs, and a Predator/Xenomorph hybrid is also created.

What Is the Prey Plot?

Every one of the Predator films is built around the same fundamental concept, which is that a hunter from another planet makes the decision to hunt people for amusement. The fact that Prey has been around for a very long time is what sets it apart from other games. The following is an official synopsis of what happens in Prey:

“In the video game Prey, the main character is a young woman by the name of Naru who is a competent and deadly fighter. The action of the novel takes place in the Comanche Nation three hundred years in the past. She was raised in the wake of some of the most renowned hunters to come out of the Great Plains, and as a result, she is the one who leaves her camp to protect the people who live there.

When she does finally succeed in capturing her prey, she discovers that it is a highly developed alien predator equipped with a technologically superior weaponry. This results in a conflict between the two adversaries that is both harsh and horrifying. The author of the novel “Prey” is Patrick Aison.
