Shang-Chi 2: What is the status of the Sequel from Marvel Studios?

It’s hard to think that it’s been almost a year since the international premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Can you believe it? As is the case with all Marvel movies that familiarize us with a new superhero, this film, too, instantly prompted us to question about a second picture based on the same superhero, in this case titled Shang-Chi 2, which is currently in production. Over the course of 2021, Shang-Chi was the ninth highest grossing film, bringing in more over $400 million around the world.

In addition to being profitable at the box office, the movie received positive reviews from a variety of publications. For instance, the movie received a score of 91% on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which was based on 334 reviews.

When contrasted to other recent Marvel films, such as “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which had a score of 65%, and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which received a score of 74%, this score is considered to be relatively high. All of these encouraging signs point to the fact that there should most certainly be a second installment. Is that what you mean to say? Let’s find out!

Date of the Release of Shang-Chi 2

To the delight of Marvel fans, it was announced in December 2021 that production on Shang-Chi 2 would begin soon. We also know that the director of the first movie, Destin Daniel Cretton, who also authored the script for the film along with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, will return as the director and writer of the sequel.

Cretton co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Callaham and Lanham. The fact that Simu Liu, who plays the titular character, will also return for the sequel was verified by Liu himself, making the news even more thrilling.

If you are an avid fan of Marvel, you are surely aware that majority of the movies in Phase 5 and three movies in Phase 6 have already been revealed, but the sequel to Shang-Chi is not one of them. This in no way precludes the production of a further installment. Don’t be concerned.

As was just mentioned up there, the information is already verified. Both Phase 5 (2023-2024) and Phase 6 (2024-2025) will include time slots dedicated to movies that have not yet been given titles. For example, between February 14 and July 25, 2025, the release of two unidentified films is slated to take place. Even if these dates are somewhat far in the future, it is possible that one of them pertains to the production of the second Shang-Chi film.

This is due to the fact that Marvel releases a large number of films each year, but in the earlier stages, there was sometimes a significant gap of time between the release of the first and second films based on a single character. For instance, the first movie based on Captain America was released in 2011, while the sequel wasn’t released until three years later in 2014.

It is also important to keep in mind that we had previously witnessed Captain in the film Avengers before he arrived in his sequel. Therefore, it’s possible that the same is true for Shang-Chi. There is a possibility that we will see him in another Marvel picture before the character makes their appearance in the second movie.

In spite of this, it is possible that the movie will not be released until the year 2024 given that filming has not yet begun and it is unknown when it will begin. In addition to the two dates that have already been discussed, there are another two dates in the latter half of 2024 that have been set aside for untitled Marvel projects. Because of this, the most likely window for the release of Shang-Chi 2 is the latter half of 2024.

What is the connection between Marvel and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Shang-Chi?

Despite the fact that Shang-Chi appears to be a movie that stands on its own, there were several elements in the film that connected it to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. For instance, during the scene that occurred in the middle of the credits, we saw Bruce Banner (also known as the Hulk) and Carol Danvers (also known as Captain Marvel) having a conversation with Wong, Shang-Chi, and Katy about the meaning of the 10 rings.

Banner and Danvers agree that the energy of the rings dates back thousands of years, and they also agree that the rings seem to be sending a signal, but it is unknown to whom or where the signal is being sent.

As the sequence comes to a close, Banner tells Shang-Chi, “Welcome to the circus.” He then proceeds to reassure Shang-Chi that the journey of the young martial artist and the mystery of the rings have only just begun. This leads one to believe that Captain Marvel and Hulk will also be involved in the production of upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films, in addition to the fact that Shang-Chi and the enigmatic rings will play a larger part.

Did audiences turn their backs on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings?

Many people regarded the movie to be unsuccessful since, despite the fact that it was the ninth most grossing movie of 2021, it still grossed less than 20 or more Marvel films combined. Shang-Chi is not a failure by any measure when measured against other films that have been released by other studios.

In spite of this, Shang-Chi can be considered a failure when compared to previous Marvel superhero movies that feature the introduction of a new character. For example, Thor (2011), Iron Man (2008), Ant-Man (2015), and Doctor Strange (2016) are all premiere movies for the titular characters, and they all generated significantly more money at the box office than Shang-Chi did.
