Robbie Coltrane, the actor who brought to life the loving gamekeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter film franchise, died on Friday, according to his agent, Scott Henderson. He was 72.
The Scottish-born actor’s previous credits include the British series “Cracker” and James Bond films “GoldenEye” and “The World Is Not Enough.”
No information about the cause of death was immediately revealed. Before Coltrane rose to international stardom playing the bearded Hagrid, he refined his comedic chops on Broadway. “Wonderboy” Keith Johnson’s Death: What Was The Cause of Death?
In the ’80s, he participated in a short-lived sketch series called “Alfresco” alongside powerhouses Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson. On Friday, Fry thanked his former co-star in a statement posted to Twitter.
“I first met Robbie Coltrane almost precisely 40 years ago. I was awe/terror/love-struck all at the same moment. Such depth, power & talent: humorous enough to provoke helpless hiccups & to honk while we made our debut TV show, ‘Alfresco,’” he wrote. “Farewell, old fellow.
Coltrane reconnected with Thompson for the six-part drama series “Tutti Frutti,” for which he was nominated for the British Academy Television Award for best actor for the first time.
In the 1990s, his first win would be for the television series “Cracker.” This criminal thriller lasted three seasons from 1993 to 1995, followed by two specials.
Coltrane’s portrayal of Hagrid, a half-giant, half-human creature, came naturally. In a single interview, he recalled that he was familiar with and fond of the books because he had read them to his children.
“As an actor, you must perform the voices. Children anticipate it. “No monotones are permitted,” he joked. But it was his acting, which gave the character — a genuine gentle half-giant — heart and soul, that people remember.
In the HBO Max special “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,” Coltrane reflected on his time in the Harry Potter films and Hagrid’s influence.
“Everyone in the world desires a very large, powerful, and honorable man on their side. This is the appeal of Superman and these other things, he remarked. “Hagrid has always been the clear decent person, right?”
According to a statement released by his UK agent, Belinda Wright, Coltrane is survived by his children Spencer and Alice, their mother Rhona Gemmell, and his sister Annie Rae.
